Formatting

L Words will edit your document according to the four major documentation systems used by the majority of U.S. universities (you may request alternate documentation styles as well, but you must submit guidelines with your document):*

APA: American Psychological Association, 6th edition

The majority of social science classes require college papers to follow the American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines for documenting sources. In-text citations list the author of the source, publication date, and, in some cases, a page reference/number, all in parentheses. Similar to the MLA system’s works cited page, the APA system requires an alphabetized (by authors’ last names–or titles for sources without authors) reference list.

CHICAGO: Chicago Documentation Style, 15th edition

Many history courses and various humanities classes require essays to follow The Chicago Manual of Style . This documenting system involves the use of footnotes or endnotes. The bibliography is appended to the end of the academic essay.

CSE Style: Biology and Other Sciences (Formerly “CBE Numbering System”)

The Council of Science Editors (CSE), formerly known as the Council of Biology Editors, has created a standard documentation format for scientific papers. The system relies on a numbering scheme. Each source is given an in-text number; a reference list at the end of the scientific paper provides publication information. The list of references is placed in the order in which each source appears in the document.

MLA: Modern Language Association, 6th edition

English and various humanities classes require college essays to follow the Modern Language Association (MLA) format to document sources. In-text citations include the author’s last name and the page number of the source in parentheses. A works cited list (alphabetized by author last name) follows the essay.

Turabian Style (Kate Turabian’s A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, & Dissertations ), 6 th edition:

This style is very similar to the Chicago Documentation Style, in that it also involves use of footnotes or endnotes for citations. The most recent edition, however, also permits use of parenthetical reference citations with a reference list at the conclusion of the document.
